Garmin VIRB Edit App Reviews
Garmin VIRB Edit saved my time and money. **Pros - It’s an awesome app with lots of video editing options such as adding unlimited number of texts, trimming and joining videos, adding audio tracks, and many more… - Believe me.. It’s FREE and best **Cons - accepts videos that are in .mp4 format - gives basic video editing tools
Doesnt edit .mov
I got this to try it out hoping it would work, i turn it on and wont let me import one of the most common types of video files
Just mangles video clips. Split a clip, delete one of the split portions, and it just moves the video onto a subsequent clip. Makes no sense. Export a video and it doesn’t even export the video as it’s been edited. It’s as if it finds hidden portions and restores them into the mp4 file. Just updated the app in case the contained some bug fixes, and now the app won’t even load. Went to the VIRB Edit help site via the app store. The help link doesn’t work. Could you make this any harder? Several hours of this customer’s time wasted. Lot’s of work to do on this Garmin.
Cant even open the program anymore
keeps giving me error messages. Very frustrating.
The Good: Video editing is basic, but functional. GPS and data overlays are innovative and very cool. Comprehensive set of dashboard gauges. The Bad: You must decide before recording whether or not you want audio since there is no option to adjust or mute recorded audio during edit. Application crashes when adding every other background music track. Speed controls lack granularity (100% is too slow, 200% is too fast). There is absolutely no help or manual built into the application that I could find. Some buttons are not obvious as to their functionality (a help system would be… er helpful for this) :) The Undecided: Since I could not get consistent data from my cadence or HR monitors (also tied to my GPS), I wanted to import this data but could not figure out how. When connecting my VIRB camera it tells me that I need updates followed by text that states, “(0) updates are available” Not sure what that means. Actions are “Update”, “Cancel” and “VIRB Elite” Not obvious what the VIRB Elite button does at all. Looking forward to this application once it is polished, but will continue to enjoy it, quirks and all until that time.
This version is total garbage. When creating a movie gauges fail to display any info! Some think if you trim a little bit it will be a work around but it only works for a few mins of the video and then the gauges go blank. Why did they totally mess this latest version up?! Stay with any version you have that is not 2.60
The overlay guages work when just watching the clip, but when you import the clip in to a video the overlay guages don’t work anymore. Like they can’t access the data. Tried version 2.7 (available on the garmin website), same problem.
No Longer generation gpx file
this version no longer generates the accompanying GPX track file when export video to hard drive. What a bummer…….
Wow, what a piece of junk
This app can't even sort clips according to date, filename or seemingly any other info. Useless.
Practically broken
So buggy it's practically unusable. It flips my video upside down, after I flip it back over in the editor, the program bogs down and often freezes. I've tried about a dozen times to finalize my last video and it freezes everytime.
Unknown error occurred during video exporting.
can't export videos at all. tried on two different macs.
Video are upside down
All my GoPro videos get imported upside down? Then there's no way to flip them right side up. Garbage
Clip Library Full???
No matter how much I delete, my clip library shows to be full and I can't import any new video. Why does this happen? This software is literally useless if I can't import new videos.
Audio not working
The background music is not loading or playing in Auto-Create Video. Playback is really choppy compared to PC version.
Great functionaly, but plauged by instability.
Once you get the hang of it, adding telemetry to your videos is fun. But it crashes all the time. All. The. Time.
Buggy
This software has a ton of potential, but unfortunately it lacks some basic features and the whole thing is extremely buggy. I own the VIRB 360 and one of they key features is its ability to shoot 5.7k RAW footage with its two cameras, which you can then stitch later into a 360 spherical video using Virb Edit. While 5.7k offers twice the resolution of a 4k video and has almost 3x the bitrate, the Virb Edit stitched 5.7k video looks worse than the in camera stiched 4k video. Details that were in the original raw files are lost entirely, its as if the footage was downsampled to a lower resolution and then upsampled to 5.7k again. I have come across numerous other bugs that I will not enumerate here, but suffice it to say that it is borderline unusable. It is unfortunate because the VIRB 360 is actually a great piece of hardware, but suffers from lack of supporting software. I would love to use the full potential of this camera one day. I have been waiting patiently for Garmin to resolve these issues since I purchased my camera back in Sept 2017. It would be extremely frustrating if they release a new camera prior to fixing their software, as its not the hardware thats the issue.
Not for me!
Needs to much computer to render or edit. The Garmin Virb edit is slow on both my mac and windows studio. Now I am stuck with $1000.00 paper weight (with all the extras I purchased. Not ready for prime time...
worthless for overlays
Bought the Virb elite 30 specifically for the g-metrix for cycling. Virb edit is not intuitive and difficult to find/add gauges - frustrating waste of time. very unhappy. looking at poor reviews from 2014 I’d like to know why this hasnt been fixed - very poor support.
Crashes on Export
App is super buggy and crashes on exporting video, worthless!! I’ve tried on 3 different computers and can’t get this thing to work, macbook, windows 10 and windows 7. Overall crappy software from Garmin as I probably should’ve expected from previous experience with this company.
so far so good
I have Garmin VIRB camera that I use for aviation and so far this software works pretty well under Mac OS Sierra on Mid-2017 Macbook Pro 15”. I didn’t try it with High Sierra yet so I can’t comment if it works with High Sierra. Otherwise, I can view my flights with GPS statistics (G-Matrix) no problem. I actually like this software but I have been using it mostly for viewing video clips with the G-Matrix data displayed on. I’m very pleased about being able to see basic flight data (elevation, speed, distance, map) right on my clip so I can analyze my flight at home.
Crashes constantly
Part of the reason I purchased a Virb vs a Go Pro was due to the Virb Edit software with G Metrix feature. Well now the software is non functional and negates the reason I chose Garmin over Go Pro… Come on garmin let’s get this fixed!!!! Software allows me to pull the footage off my camera onto my computer but I can’t do anything else without crashing.
Pretty Typical Garmin Software
I’ve used Garmin products forever and generally really like their GPS devices, but their computer software is consistantly poorly thought out and inadequately tested. Garmin VIRB Edit is no different. Frequent crashes, pinwheel hell, etc… It appears that once an imported clip becomes corrupt the video it is in can’t be edited and trying to put that clip in any other video crashes the app. Unfortunately deleting and reinstalling the app doesn’t help and there’s no indication as to why the clip has been corrupted. I’m now on the search for some other software that will use G-Metrix.
Editor doesn’t open, making Garmin VIRB 360 worthless
Editor will not stay open; it crashes immediately. I have OS X 10.12, the latest version. I bought a Garmin VIRB 360, which is pretty much useless without this editor. Unfortunately, unless they fix the editor, it the VIRB 360 is a waste of money.
Same problem as others - Crashes and sits forever
Same issue here - any attempt to edit clips crashes the app. Selecting the video being worked on when reentering app causes perpetual timeout.
Crash problem w G-Metrix
I’m having the same problems as other reviewers on the most recent update. Anytime G-Metrix is added, the application crashes. Re-opening the app, and editing the video, it spins for minutes, then crashes. I’ve tried deleting the video clip with G-Metrix and starting over again. No luck. Continued crashing. Didn’t have this problem prior to the current version. I’d give it at least four stars if it weren’t for this. But until Garmin fixes the latest bug, one star. I wish I could do zero stars — because really, it’s a non-functioning application as far as I’m concerned. This is a persistent issue with Garmin in general, I feel: Lack of quality testing before roll-out. If it’s any indication of Garmin’s future, I’m tempted to start looking elsewhere. Which is scary, given that Garmin is (almost literally) in my backyard (Olathe, KS). Garmin — get your stuff together. It’s embarassing.
Do Not Use
Running a Mac Mini. Previous app took forever to open. This one now not opening at all.
Crashes over and over again
Loaded up video from Virb Basic. So far, so good. Went to load the GPX from my fenix 3, crash. Tried to reload the app and as soon as I open what I was working on, crash. Rebooted iMac. Still crashes when I try to load my video. Deleted video and tried to create a new one. Crashed just importing the video. I give up. Not doing anything fancy here. The older version was far more reliable.
Disappointed
I purchased the VIRB for the GPS and ability to overlay the G-Metrix data. The program would be great if it worked. everytime I try to edit a clip or add an overlay the program will freeze. Garmin really need to get this fixed.
Fail
App no longers opens and generates an error code for Apple...

Not able to have gauges in Create Movie
This version is total garbage. When creating a movie gauges fail to display any info! Some think if you trim a little bit it will be a work around but it only works for a few mins of the video and then the gauges go blank. Why did they totally mess this latest version up?!
